Chronic Ear Disease

Blaine & Shoreview Ear Infection Treatments

Do you or someone you care about suffer from a recurring ear infection? Perhaps the ear infection doesn’t seem to heal even with the use of antibiotics? If so, visit MN Ear & Sinus for a complete diagnosis and treatment. Our team, led by our primary surgeon Dr. Yorgason, has more than 10 years of experience in treating chronic ear diseases.

What is Chronic Ear Disease?

Chronic ear disease, also known as acute otitis media, is an infection that affects the middle ear (the area behind the eardrum).

Sometimes, the ear tube can get blocked and lead to infection. If the infection is left untreated, it could rupture the eardrum and spread into the inner ear. The result? Permanent sensorineural hearing loss.

Symptoms of Chronic Ear Disease?

Chronic ear disease can affect one or both ears. The condition features symptoms of ear infection, which include:

  • Mild to moderate pain the ear
  • A pressure sensation
  • Hearing loss
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Fluid discharge
  • Fever or sweating
  • Insomnia

Ear Disease in Children

Ear infections are common in children under the age of five. They are two common types of ear infections: middle ear infections and external ear infections. While most infections clear off with the use of antibiotics, a few may sometimes persist.

If you notice that the sleeping and eating habits of your baby have changed, you should visit our clinic in Blaine. Also, if the baby is fussier than usual when going to sleep, this could be a sign that they are uncomfortable due to the pressure in the ear.

When Should You See a Doctor?

If you have been diagnosed with an acute ear infection, it’s advisable to seek medical care to prevent chronic ear infections from developing. At MN Ear & Sinus Center in Blaine, you will be cared for by professionals with years of experience in ear and sinus problems.

Schedule a consultation with Dr. Yorgason to get your concerns related to ear problems addressed. Here are some instances when you need to consult a doctor:

  • Your ear infection is not responding to regular treatments
  • New symptoms accompany your ear infections
  • You suspect your child has an ear infection

Treatment Options

There are various medications that can treat chronic ear infections that have not yet developed into chronic ear disease (chronic otitis media). To cure this disease, surgery is often required.

Bilateral Tympanostomy

Dr. Yorgason may recommend surgery to drain out fluid from the middle ear. The procedure involves inserting a tube that connects the middle ear to the outer ear. Draining fluid from the middle ear reduces infections as well as relieves the symptoms of chronic ear disease.

Tympanoplasty with Mastoidectomy

Dr. Yorgason can also make an incision and drill out the infection from the mastoid bone. This surgery is known as tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy. The surgery is carried out to cure chronic ear disease by repairing or replacing mastoid bones.
